A Course in Miracles is a self-help book written by Helen Schucman that teaches people the "secrets" of living a life of abundance. The underlying theory is that the best "miracle" we can do for ourselves is the actual act of receiving a full "knowledge of the presence of love" in our lives. Schucman said the book was dictated to her, words for words, through "inner voice dictation."
The premise of this book is that when we obtain a "knowledge of the presence of love" and make a personal relationship with the Lord, all that is required is an effort to experience the reality of this "knowledge of the miracle." The term miracle is used heavily throughout the book and is used to describe such things as the ability to experience a "healing" of the heart, or a "repentance," or the vision of paradise. Helen Schucman makes mention of these terms several times in this book, but she does not provide any explanation as to why they are used. I have read a number of books that have used these terms in their titles, yet none of them has provided any explanation as to why they are used, or what they mean.
The "course in miracles" consists of a set of ten "key principles" which are referred to throughout the course. The ten principles are commonly referred to as "principles of love," and they basically deal with forgiveness, preparation, discernment, motivation, response, renewal, trust, and miracles. The ten "principle" teachings are presented in the daily lessons that follow each week. They also form a core component of the A Course in Miracles workbook.
The basis for the teachings of the A course in miracles comes from correct perception, which Schucman defines as "a state of harmony with all people, whether they are our loved ones or strangers." Correct perception is necessary because without it no one can have true faith in God or any other entity. However, the fact that God speaks through specialness, indicates that what God is saying to us is in direct result of our actions. In other words, God's truths are in direct connection with our personal actions.
We must first consider the way in which the world functions, so that we may be able to experience the miracle of miracles. When we are born, our mother has the power to give us life, and to mold our bodies into the perfect structure for the physical needs of life. In a sense, we are infants who have yet to learn. Our mother's thoughts and perceptions determine the course of our lives and determine which way we will be heading. If we find ourselves following a different path than our mother's, a miracle is likely to occur as a result.
It is in this process of learning that miracles occur, when we come in contact with Jesus Christ and receive the forgiveness of His son Jesus. Through the forgiveness of Jesus Christ, we can be guided in every walk of life by the Holy Spirit and be led by the Holy Ghost to walk regularly by the way of the Lord, never stumbling or falling. The ability to walk with the Spirit and the ability to receive the forgiveness of Christ, go hand in hand and result in a miracle to help others.
